Chapter 40: Chapter 40
The next weekend, at X District Apartment Building.
Due to the heavy rainfall last night, the atmosphere was fresh and bright. It was wet and slightly chilled outside, so no one had left their apartments yet.
On this peaceful morning, Mrs. Lin sat at the dining table with her children. While Dylan ate hastily, Annie ate her food carefully, seemingly oblivious to her surroundings.
Used to the girl’s quietness, Mrs. Lin didn’t pay any attention to her. Her attention was on her son who had been acting more than strange recently.
“Dylan.” She cleared her throat. “Where again did you say you got that money from?”
Mrs. Lin was still confused by her son’s explanation. Despite Annie’s assurance that the boy might be telling the truth, she couldn’t shake off the bad feeling.
Hearing the woman’s question towards Dylan, Annie stopped eating and looked up. She was also waiting for the guy’s answer. She only reassured her mother because she didn’t want her to worry. Otherwise, she was a bit skeptical.
“Mum!?” Dylan who hadn’t expected the question seemed a bit flabbergasted. He thought they were over that talk already. “I told you I got a freelance job. If you don’t understand what freelance is, Big Sis does.”
“Sis.” He turned to Annie. “Didn’t you explain to her how it works?”
Annie only looked at him before she continued eating. Dylan told them he got an online job that paid handsomely. His major was software engineering, and someone hired him to build a website for them.
The guy didn’t even have a proper phone and he lacked a laptop. Wasn’t that a bit suspicious?
“Dylan, just make sure you’re telling me the truth.” Mrs. Lin pointed a spatula at him. “If not, I’m going to break your head if I find out you are doing some shady business.”
Dylan scratched the back of his neck, avoiding her eyes. “Why are you so worried about where I got that money from, Mum? The good thing is we were able to pay for the rent. Also, your store is now safe.”
Mrs. Lin couldn’t refute his words. It was just that she didn’t want any of the children to take the bad route. Their poverty hadn’t reached that level.
Annie was getting paid handsomely, especially with her promotion. Even though she felt guilty for taking the girl’s money all the time, at least it was from a legit source.
“You better be careful.” She gave Dylan a pointed look. “I’m warning you again. You won’t like my anger, Dylan.”
Dylan felt uncomfortable under her strict gaze. Quietly, he stood up with his food plate.
“Where are you going?” Mrs. Lin snapped at him.
Dylan wanted to open his mouth to reply, but she shut him up.
“Sit down and finish your food. Unless you want me to force it down your throat.” Mrs. Lin pointed at the chair.
Dylan had no choice but to sit down. He was now dispirited, so he ate his food slowly. He nudged at Annie, hoping she would speak up for him, but she didn’t.
How could he forget that she was even more sensitive than the woman? His sister acting cool didn’t mean she wasn’t keeping a watchful eye on him.
Dylan dropped his head. Like a defeated warrior, the guy looked as if he was stripped of his pride.
Silence descended, but it didn’t last. The family was still eating when a loud knock came from the door.
“I’ll take a look,” Dylan said weakly. He stood up and headed to the door. Opening it, his brows furrowed at the sight of the man.
“Hehe, Brother-in-law, it is you.” Mr. Su smiled.
“It is you again.” Dylan was confused. “Haven’t we paid the rent already? Why would Mr. Su visit us early this morning?”
Hearing the commotion from the door, Annie and Mrs. Lin exchanged confused looks. They both walked to the door and were quite confused to see the man.
“What does Mr. Su wants this morning? It seems you have a problem with my door,” Mrs. Lin said in a displeased tone.
This man, even though he looked a bit normal, didn’t appear alright to her. He lacked manners when it came to knocking. And she just didn’t like him.
“Why are you so worked up this morning, Mother-in-law? Allow me to greet you first, at least.”
“You– Who is your mother-in-law?”
“This Mr. Su is here again.”
“Is he really serious about Annie?”
“Hmmm, from the looks of it, he looks like those men that don’t take no for an answer.”
The neighbors came out and started whispering. They had heard the man’s voice from their rooms and couldn’t wait to take a look.
Mr. Su ignored the cold look Mrs. Lin was giving him. He looked at Annie, smiling foolishly. “Before you make a scene, how about you invite me into your apartment so you can listen to what I came with?” he said in a voice only the people standing in front of him could hear.
Mr. Su had thought it over throughout the weekend. That day, he was very mad. So he wanted to try again to see if this beauty would concede. If not then, he would think about doing it the hard way.
“Mr. Su,” Annie laughed softly, shaking her head. “Why do you demand to enter our apartment? Isn’t your eagerness suspicious?”
“You this girl, you have a sharp tongue.” Mr. Su laughed. “It’s alright, it’s alright. Since you’re beautiful, I won’t mind it.”
The man was speaking as if he already had power over her. His haughtiness annoyed Mrs. Lin, and Dylan was already getting irritated.
“Hey, Mr. Su. You can’t act willfully just because you’re the caretaker. It is not by force, right? My Sister doesn’t like you.”
“I also heard that Mr. Su has a wife. Will you be happy if your wife does the same thing you are doing now?” Annie twitched her lips. “Respect yourself as the caretaker, and we the tenants will give you the same respect. Even if you’re the landlord today, you have no right to disturb us.”
“Mr. Su, our relationship is formal. If I hear you calling me your mother-in-law again, I swear you won’t like what I will do.”
Mr. Su was speechless as the three people attacked him. Not only the girl and the mother, but even the brother was arrogant. He didn’t think they would have the courage to berate him.
Him, the whole Mr. Su. Even though he was already married, a lot of girls curry favor with him. He was well off and he had nice cars.
“Mrs. Lin, your family seems arrogant. If your daughter agrees to be my woman, I’m telling you, you won’t have to beg outside anymore.”
“When did you see me beg outside?”
“Having a store is like begging people for money. You can sit at home and have money flowing into your account. Just let your daughter come with me.”
