Chapter 593: Chapter 593: Nanny Zhang’s Anxiety
Lost in these thoughts, they arrived at Ji Youran’s Courtyard.
"Princess, you’re finally here! The two hours are almost up," Zhao Fei exclaimed, stepping forward hurriedly. He had been standing at the entrance to Ji Youran’s Courtyard and saw Ji Youyuan returning with Xiaosuisui.
"Second Uncle!" Xiaosuisui blinked, only then remembering that her family’s unlucky Second Uncle had been poisoned.
She scurried into Ji Youran’s room on her short legs. Looking at the man on the bed, his lips black and his face purplish, she blinked.
"How did Second Uncle suddenly get poisoned?"
Zhao Fei, looking quite helpless, could only briefly recount what had happened.
"Didn’t we find Master’s stolen medicine box? I opened it to sort things out and found an Elixir that could prolong life was missing. Just then, Master came in from outside and asked what I was doing. I told him that an Elixir that prolongs life was missing from one of the bottles. He then picked up the Elixir bottles in the medicine box, looked them over, and then swallowed a Medicine Pill from a bottle that looked exactly like the one that held the life-prolonging Elixir. That bottle actually contained a Poison Pill! I... I’ve never seen it before, and I don’t know the Antidote..."
Xiaosuisui, having studied Medical Skills with Ji Youran for a few days, also understood the refining of Elixirs and how to distinguish Poison Pills from Antidotes.
"Is there any more of the Poison Pill Second Uncle consumed?"
"Yes! I found another one. Here it is!" Zhao Fei quickly handed the Poison Pill to Xiaosuisui.
Xiaosuisui took it, observed it in her hand, then held it under her nose and sniffed.
"Princess, be careful! Don’t put it in your mouth!" Zhao Fei, terrified, quickly warned her when he saw she was about to put the Poison Pill in her mouth to taste it.
Xiaosuisui paid him no mind. She still placed the Poison Pill on her tongue and tasted it, then pursed her lips. Turning, she went behind the desk and picked up a book. As she did, everyone’s eyes widened in unison; beneath the book lay a hidden Mechanism!
Xiaosuisui ignored their shocked expressions. She pressed the Mechanism, and another row of medicine racks rotated out from behind the desk.
Various medicine vials lined the racks. Xiaosuisui examined them one by one, finally selecting a vial adorned with a plum blossom pattern. She poured out a jade-white Medicine Pill, sniffed it, and then licked it. Everyone watched, holding their breath.
"Suisui!" Old Lady Ji called out in worry.
Xiaosuisui ignored her and bounced over to Ji Youran, feeding the Medicine Pill into his mouth.
Seeing her actions, everyone stared intently at Ji Youran’s face, not daring to breathe, their eyes wide and unblinking.
"It’s working. Second Uncle won’t die." Xiaosuisui took Ji Youran’s pulse with one hand and lifted his eyelid with the other.
This technique deeply impressed the old Doctor who had been invited to perform acupuncture on Ji Youran.
"Old Madam! This little girl has remarkable talent for Medical Skills! Does she already have a Master?" the old Doctor asked Old Lady Ji excitedly.
Old Lady Ji chuckled. Standing beside Xiaosuisui, she reached out, gently patted her head, and said,
"Oh, her! She’s been learning Medical Skills from her Second Uncle since she was tiny. She can even prescribe and prepare medicines now."
"So that’s how it is! No wonder!" the old Doctor exclaimed. "The poison affecting Second Master Ji was so potent. I was just thinking earlier, I’ve never encountered this kind of poison before. Even if the correct Antidote were placed right in front of me, I wouldn’t necessarily dare administer it to Second Master Ji!" The old Doctor finished speaking and sighed, deeply astounded.
"Goodness me! Looking at all those vials and jars earlier, filled with so many Elixirs, I couldn’t tell which was a Poison Pill and which was an Antidote! Yet this little girl picked up the Antidote and made the call. Even I, an old Doctor with decades of practice, wouldn’t have such courage!"
The old Doctor’s eyes gleamed as he looked at Xiaosuisui. Xiaosuisui, in turn, giggled softly as she saw the dark color gradually receding from Ji Youran’s lips.
"Second Uncle is better now; the poison is neutralized." The little girl was overjoyed, her big eyes looking to everyone for praise.
Old Lady Ji swept her into her arms, planted a kiss on her little cheek, and exclaimed, "My Suisui is so capable! If Grandmother ever gets a headache or a fever, I’ll be counting on my Suisui to cure me."
"Mother! What are you saying? You’re perfectly healthy, free from any illness or misfortune!" Zhu Xiuxiu quickly interjected. Old Lady Ji’s daughters-in-law were all very filial; whenever she mentioned illness, they became even more anxious than her own sons.
"I was just saying. It’s not like I’ll actually fall ill just because I mentioned it."
"Grandmother won’t get sick! Grandmother has to stay well!" Xiaosuisui planted a loud SMACK of a kiss on Old Lady Ji’s face. This delighted the old lady beyond measure, and she hugged her little treasure tightly, showering her with kisses.
She was so overjoyed she didn’t even notice when the Doctor was escorted out!
"Alright, Mother! Second Brother’s poison has been neutralized. You should rest assured now. Go back and rest first! We have to go to Qixia City early tomorrow morning!" Ji Youyuan remarked, noticing his old mother still holding Xiaosuisui, reluctant to let go. He couldn’t bear to see her like that any longer and gently reminded her.
"Alright! Then I’ll go rest. Suisui, would you like to sleep with Grandmother tonight?"
"Yes, yes! I want to sleep with Grandmother tonight!" Xiaosuisui, overjoyed, hopped down from Old Lady Ji’s arms and pulled her towards her own Courtyard.
Nanny Zhang had been waiting in Xiaosuisui’s Courtyard. Earlier that day, Eunuch Ling had come from the Palace specifically to reprimand her, which had scared her half to death.
Fortunately, Eunuch Ling later mentioned that there was still room for maneuver regarding the Princess’s matter and instructed her to teach the Princess properly going forward.
If the Princess’s etiquette remained so crude, she feared she might genuinely be sent to the Cold Palace to accompany the Dowager Consorts.
Therefore, Nanny Zhang secretly vowed to seize this opportunity and diligently teach the Princess. She had instructed Yunxiang to wait at the front; as soon as the Princess returned, she planned to begin etiquette lessons that very night.
However, after waiting in the Courtyard for most of the night, Yunxiang informed her that the Princess had gone to Old Lady Ji’s Courtyard to sleep with her for the night.
Nanny Zhang stood in the Courtyard. Upon hearing this, she couldn’t help but take a deep breath. Steeling her resolve, she gritted her teeth and took Yunxiang to Old Lady Ji’s Courtyard.
"It’s so late, Nanny Zhang. Why have you come? I have attendants here in my Courtyard; there’s no need to worry."
What bitterness filled Nanny Zhang’s heart! The Princess couldn’t be beaten or scolded, and she wasn’t always focused on learning her etiquette. The Princess spent two out of every three days wandering about outside; sometimes, Nanny Zhang couldn’t even catch a glimpse of her. If she didn’t seize this chance to teach the Princess proper etiquette now, she feared that the next time His Majesty found fault, she would truly be sent to the Cold Palace.
